 Portland was founded in 1845 by Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove, who christened it "Portland". The surveyor Thomas Brown choose to lay out a grid of 16 blocks which formed the original basis of the downtown of the city. This original subdivided area extended from the river to Second Avenue and from Washington to Jefferson streets. Portlanders enjoy the city's close proximity to the ocean and mountains, but even a person stuck in the city can find a little slice of nature.
